Series 13. Esther | |
Background Times and Trends in Esther (1.4MB) |
When did the events of Esther take place? Probably Zechariah 9-14 was written during the interval between Ezra chapter 6 and chapter 7. Almost certainly the story of Esther took place in these years. Only a small number of Jews returned under the first edict, an estimated 50,000. In the past 70 years most of the exiles of Judah and the remnants of the Israelite exiles to Assyria, had established themselves well in the lands of the Babylonian empire, owning property, conducting business and raising their families. Most by then had not seen Palestine, and their passion for it had waned. The first file, much larger, is not a study as such, but serves to set the scene for all of the 6 studies. Study 13.5 includes a student worksheet which can be found here. The last file deals with our notions of how God responds to violence. |
