Tom's Story

Like his wife, Tom Grover was not tall but was rather thick set with light brown hair and a moustache. Typically an ex-naval man, he had a happy jolly disposition and was full of fun and teasing.

Tom came to understand what it was that had changed the life of his wife and not long after the commencement of the Sunday School, made his peace with God. He became a staunch Christian and a reliable worker the Church. He was as hospitable as his wife and was known by all as a sincere hard working man. One early achievement was his provision of an acetylene gas lighting system which came from the Seymour Military camp, a relic of World War 1.When electricity came to Glen Park, in the late 1940's, he wired the hall for electric light.

Services were first held in the Grover's home probably late in 1923, until it was crowded out. They then moved to 'Rest-a-While' in 1924. Whilst travelling on the train, Tom met Mr Northeast who lived in Separation Street, Fairfield, from the Fairfield Church of Christ and asked him to come out and assist in starting the Church. He became our first preacher.

Tom joined the City Men's Bible Class, which met then in the evenings after work. The was led by Cannon C H Nash, also principal of the Melbourne Bible Institute. Thus began the association of the Glen Park Mission with that College. When it was not possible for students to provide pulpit ministry, Tom would preach the morning sermon. Sunday School was held in the afternoon, followed by an evening service. There were few cars at that time, so all who attended had to walk in all weathers. In inter darkness torches and hurricane lamps could be seen converging on the hall from all directions.
